Did you know that there are about 500 different types of oak trees? North America has the largest number of oak species, with approximately 160 species in Mexico and about 90 in the United States. The fruit is a nut called an acorn, and each acorn contains one seed (rarely two or three) and takes 6–18 months to mature, depending on their species. In North America, the northern red oak is one of the most prized for lumber. White oak is often used to make wine barrels. Raleigh, N.C., is known as the "City of Oaks." Large oak trees should be at least 20-30ft away from your home. Oak tree branches generally have a spread of at least 50ft. Here is a picture of a large oak tree in south Asheville.
