There has been a heavy presence of Sycamore Anthracnose on our Sycamore trees in the Asheville area this year. This can be noted by the newly emerged leaves being brown and wilted. Sycamore Anthracnose is caused by a fungus that disfigures Sycamore and Plane trees. This fungus is native to the United States and found throughout Sycamores. The fungus spreads by rain and wind from infected trees to healthy trees. This in itself is not fatal to the tree, but opens a tree up to pests and disease. This fungus causes cankers to form on 1-2-year-old twigs. The repeated yearly infection of young branches causes abnormal branching, loss of vigor, dieback, and susceptibility to disease and insects. At Asheville Arborists, we diagnose Sycamore Anthracnose and treat it for proper tree growth. Protection begins the year after the application of treatment and lasts for three years.
