TREE PRUNING
TREE PRUNING
Tree pruning should always be completed with a clear objective and scope in mind. In most natural circumstances trees typically take care of themselves through naturally shedding limbs that are not needed. In urban situations, trees need to be trimmed for several reasons including: providing clearance to structures, reducing risks associated with falling dead branches, reducing weight on over extended branches, and meeting specific goals associated with views and property management.
Our general philosophy when pruning trees is to remove a larger volume of smaller diameter branches as opposed to removing any large diameter branches. This philosophy results in less introduced decay while maintaining a natural tree canopy.
Please note: Indiscriminate pruning can harm a tree. Tree pruning should be done by a qualified professional arborist who knows if, when, and where a tree should be pruned. Topping off a tree is a harmful practice that decreases tree vitality and while creating an inherently dangerous branch structure.
Some important benefits of having your trees pruned professionally are:
-
Safety - Pruning can increase structural stability and prevent damage from falling branches.
-
Improved Health – Removing unhealthy, damaged, or dead branches on young and mature trees will make them healthier.
-
Enhanced Structure – Developmental pruning of young trees will encourage them to grow with their proper shape and structure. Newly planted trees can benefit the most from proper structural pruning by setting them up for a successful life with strongly attached branches.
-
Weight Reduction - It is not uncommon for trees to develop large scaffold limbs that grow over houses and other potential targets. Proper end weight reduction allows you to maintain the natural beauty and shape of your tree, while reducing the weight on the leverage arm of the branch. We accomplish this by selectively removing small diameter branches from the ends of the limb. This achieves our initial goal of reducing the leverage on the attachment point, and it also indicates to that limb to slow its growth rate down.
-
Attractive Appearance - Pruning for aesthetics enhances the enjoyment of your landscape and improves your property value.
-
Restoration - Trees that have been damaged through improper topping practices, or damaged from storm events can be restored, over time, to a prior state through selective thinning and removal of sprouts to develop a new, strong canopy.
-
View Pruning - Short and long range views will enhance your enjoyment and increase the value of your property. We accomplish this by balancing the beauty of the forest immediately surrounding your house, while creating windows to more desirable view points. This balanced approach helps keep your trees healthy, while also decreasing the maintenance intervals associated with preserving view sheds.
As ISA Certified Arborists with years of experience in tree care, we are qualified to help you determine if, when and where your trees need trimming or pruning. We are advocates of natural tree growth and will not recommend or perform unnecessary maintenance.
